Back in the day, most websites were built in straight HTML code. Its how I learned to develop websites. HTML websites require little maintenance and are super fast which is great for user experience and search engine optimization.
HTML websites do have their challenges, though. It can be difficult to find a coding specialist. And if ecommerce, or other database driven capabilities are desired in the future, it can be much more cumbersome than with a content management system.
HTML website design code was invented in 1991 and offically released in 1993 as HTML 1.0. During these early years, new versions were released every two years until HTML 4.0 in 1999. HTML4 was the version I originally certified in and it was exceedingly popular as it gave website designers many new tools to market on the web.
HTML4 was the standard for 9 years. There were a couple minor updates and a re-release, but finally in 2008, HTML5 was released. Among other technical, SEO, and security improvements, HTML5 helped adapt to mobile and video integration and standardized much of the technical coding. Halfway through its second decade, HTML5 has been even more successful.
